What is Strong Customer Authentication?
Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a regulatory requirement in Europe set out in the Regulatory Technical Standards aimed at reducing fraud and enhancing the security of online and contactless offline payments. To comply with SCA standards and accept payments, businesses must integrate additional authentication steps into their checkout processes. SCA mandates the use of at least two of the following three elements for authentication:

Knowledge Factor – something you know
In today’s digital world, the Knowledge Factor is a common authentication method where users provide information they know, such as passwords, security questions, or PINs. However, relying solely on something you know, like a password or security question, poses security risks as they can be easily stolen or guessed by malicious actors.
Passwords, security questions, and PINs are examples of the Knowledge Factor, but they are no longer sufficient to ensure robust security. Modern authentication requires additional factors, such as the Possession Factor (something you have) and the Inherence Factor (something you are), to provide stronger protection against unauthorized access.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) combines multiple factors, including something you know, with something you have and something you are, to enhance security and verify the user’s identity more effectively. As digital security evolves, relying solely on the Knowledge Factor is no longer adequate to protect sensitive information and assets.
Possession Factor – something you have
The Possession Factor enhances authentication security by requiring users to provide evidence of physical possession of an item, such as a SIM card, mobile phone, smart card, hardware OTP token, or FIDO2 security key.
Advancements in technology have made implementing the Possession Factor easier and more secure than relying solely on usernames and passwords. Possessing a hardware item makes authentication significantly more robust compared to the Knowledge Factor.
While SIM cards may have vulnerabilities, their possession can still be utilized for SMS passcode authentication. Similarly, smartphones can serve as powerful authentication devices when equipped with an authenticator app like Rublon Authenticator.
Combining a credit card with a PIN constitutes Multi-Factor Authentication, incorporating both the Possession and Knowledge Factors.
Although hardware OTP tokens may incur costs, they generate one-time passwords for added security.
FIDO2 standard security keys, such as WebAuthn and U2F Security Keys, offer strong cryptographic security. Biometrically-enabled keys further bolster security by combining possession with biometric verification, making them highly resistant to attacks requiring physical access.
Inherence Factor – something you are
The Inherence Factor stands as one of the most robust authentication methods available. Unlike other factors, it relies on unique biological features inherent to each individual. Biometric authentication, including fingerprint scans, retina patterns, and facial recognition, exemplifies the Inherence Factor’s strength. Some security keys, such as those incorporating fingerprinting technology, combine the Possession Factor with the Inherence Factor for heightened security.
